I grew up in Pella, Iowa where the whole town revolves around Tulip Time—a beautiful and authentic 3 day festival filled with thousands of stunning tulips, elaborate costumes, delicious food, seamless parades, and much more. It’s a community wide production and it’s done so well. I have such great memories about Tulip Time—but, for now, let’s talk about the food.
If you’re visiting Pella during Tulip Time, you’ll find locals making hot stroopwafels and poffertjes made-to-order on the street corners. Sound good? Oh, you bet it is. Since I can’t instantly transport you (and myself) to Pella here’s what I’m indulging in this week to satisfy my Dutch treat craving. Eet Smakelijk! (Enjoy!)
Poffertjes
Poffertjes make a regular appearance at our house for breakfast. Axel is nuts about them. Often times, I don’t even use our poffertje pan—I just whip up the batter and use a regular large, nonstick frying pan to make thin, mini pancakes. It’s not quite as authentic, but it still tastes great. We usually throw in a few mini chocolate chips as well.
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup hot water
3 eggs
1/4 cup vegetable oil
Directions: Mix all ingredients together. Pour into a greased, hot poffertjes pan. Flip poffertjes. Top with butter and powdered sugar. Or strawberries. Or whip cream. Or all of those things.
Stroopwafels
I’m not making stroopwafels from scratch. I’m simply buying them from the store and dipping them in chocolate. Because I’m all about easy…and chocolate.
1 bag of Mini Dutch Stroopwafels
1 container of Dolci Frutta Hard Chocolate Shell (or whatever you prefer)
Directions: Dip your stroopwafels in chocolate and set them on wax paper to harden. Enjoy with your tea or coffee.
